Merridy Elphick is the founder and director of Merridy Elphick Lawyers Pty Limited, and the principal solicitor of the firm. Merridy established the firm with a view to providing quality advocacy along with cost effective yet personalised service to her clients. Merridy has strong links to Newcastle having studied her Bachelor Law Degree at the University of Newcastle along with a Bachelor of Social Science. Merridy has operated law firms in the Newcastle CBD for over 15 years.
While studying, Merridy worked as a volunteer with the University of Newcastle Public Interest Advocacy Centre on inquests into Police shootings and provided voluntary work for legal educators in East Timor. Over the last few years Merridy along with many other dedicated lawyers, has provided assistance to people seeking asylum and protection visas.
Merridy has worked for over 15 years as a Family Law Partner and since 2014 as the Principal of Merridy Elphick Lawyers. During that time the firm has grown from two staff members to 10. She has an interest in property matters including complex cases such as issues arising out of Binding Financial Agreements, the valuation of business interests and damages as a result of domestic violence.
Merridy has trained as a mediator and believes that for many people the best result is one that is achieved without litigation. She understands that mediation can only be of value when both parties’ interests are considered. Unfortunately, some people are unable to resolve their differences without the need for Family Court litigation.
With a strong interest in social justice and environmental issues, outside of work Merridy’s interests include hiking, politics and the odd good movie on a Sunday afternoon.
