If you’re in a domestic violence situation or have suffered domestic violence, then a lawyer can help you, in conjunction with the police, to arrange a domestic violence protection order (DVO), family violence intervention order (IVO) or restraining order to help protect you as well as care arrangements for children. Once you have a domestic violence order in place against the person who was violent towards you, they are not allowed near you and can face criminal charges (including imprisonment) if they breach the order.

If you’re facing domestic violence allegations, then a lawyer can help you from potentially having a criminal record and losing access to your child or children. You will need to have a confidential and candid discussion with your domestic violence lawyer (family lawyer or criminal lawyer) about the domestic violence accusations, events and situation so that they can provide you with legal advice and help defend you at your Local Court or Magistrates Court. If you do have a DVO or IVO against you, remember that you must not breach it. Book to get legal advice from a lawyer if you need help understanding what you can and cannot do under your order.
